Vest-Lista features a unique landscape, rich in nature- and cultural experiences set in an active agricultural environment. The area holds one of Norway’s oldest agricultural landscapes. Today farming is done in a modern fashion, with the use of artificial fertilizer and enhanced feeds. Parts of the area still uphold the traditional farming method of heather burning.
The area contains great cultural historical and biological values. Particularly the cultural historical features are numerous. The separate sites of cultural interest and elements of cultural landscape are all included in a larger cultural environment which enhances understanding and correlation of the various cultural-historical values.
All over the country the modernisation of farming methods lead to the relocation or removal of buildings and stone walls in order to rationally work larger areas of land.
At Vest-Lista the modernisation in farming happened largely within an old and traditional framework, therefore the old agricultural landscape is particularly well preserved here.
A cultural-landscape is to a larger or smaller degree shaped by humans. An agricultural-landscapeis created through habitation and use of the landscape through thousands of years.
The interconnection of buildings, farmed land and unfarmed land contain cultural-historical and biological values, greatly dependent on continual use and maintenance for their upkeep.
